Mpox Update - Fall 2024

In August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency due to a new strain of mpox that has been spreading across parts of Africa. While this might sound alarming, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have assured us that the risk of this new variant in the U.S. remains low. At Kind Clinic, we’re committed to keeping our community informed and safe by closely monitoring any developments in the spread of mpox in our region.

What Does This Mean for Vaccinations?

If you’ve already received two doses of the mpox vaccine, you’re considered fully vaccinated. According to the CDC, there is no current recommendation for additional booster doses. Being fully vaccinated provides you with protection against this new strain of mpox.

However, if you think you may have been exposed to mpox or are seeking vaccination for added peace of mind, Kind Clinic is here to help. Our Patient Support Center is available to assist you with scheduling an appointment to get vaccinated. Just give us a call at 833-937-5463.

At the moment, we have a limited supply of mpox vaccines in our Austin and San Antonio locations, but we are actively working with public health authorities to secure more doses and expand access to those who need them.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Mpox

Mpox symptoms may vary but typically include:

  • Rash: This often occurs near the genital area but can also appear on other parts of the body, including the hands, feet, and chest. The rash may initially resemble pimples or blisters and can be painful or itchy.
  • Flu-like Symptoms: These may include fever, chills, muscle aches, and a sore throat.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms or suspect you may have been exposed to mpox, it’s important to seek medical care promptly. Call Kind Clinic’s Patient Support Center at 833-937-5463 to schedule an appointment and get the care you need.

Mpox Prevention and Staying Informed

Taking steps to protect yourself from mpox is crucial, especially for those who may be at higher risk. Here are some simple precautions:

  • Get vaccinated: If you’re eligible and recommended, receiving the mpox vaccine can offer significant protection.
  • Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact: Steer clear of intimate contact with people who have a rash or symptoms of mpox.
  • Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer to prevent infection.
  • Use barriers during intimate contact: While condoms and other barriers reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs, they don’t fully protect against mpox. Mpox is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, but intimate contact remains the most significant risk factor for transmission.

While the risk of mpox remains low in the U.S., it’s always important to stay vigilant and informed. Kind Clinic is dedicated to providing the latest updates and resources. If you have any concerns or need additional information, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
